Image of ATM in vestibule post-opening as RBC branch (former HSBC branch 10430 in Kelowna):

It was like this for at least a week, until they replace the entire ATM and fascia with an RBC ATM and fascia. Nevertheless, the red colour scheme persists.

The existing RBC main branch is located one block over and two and a half blocks up, has highway frontage, and larger square footage. I think it's safe to say when we see former HSBC branches that look like this, they will close in the next 12-18 months.

In fact, I think, given RBC's large existing branch network, most if not all former HSBC branches between Metro Vancouver and northwestern Ontario will close, as will most, if not all, former HSBC branches east of Ontario. There will be some closures in Metro Vancouver and Toronto, too, probably about 5-15 closures in the GTA and 10-20 in Metro Vancouver.

The same can be said for the former transit 10522 in Woodbridge, Ontario. Prior to the sale, HSBC’s signage including the frames were removed from the branch and have yet to be replaced. There is an RBC branch within a 5 minute drive to this location, so it safe to presume that this branch will be shuttered.

Fun fact: The signage of this location (specifically the frame) still wore the colours of the former Intesa bank after HSBC acquired the operations and right up until the RBC acquisition.

Yeah, I agree with this assessment on the former HSBC branch 10522, and that's funny about the branch still using the Intesa Bank colour scheme. That's an old HSBC acquisition, older than even HSBC buying Household Finance. Most of our branches in B.C. were former Bank of British Columbia branches. Interestingly, branch 10430 previously occupied this building at 313-315 Water Street back when it was part of the Bank of British Columbia and early Hongkong Bank of Canada days (1980s to mid 1990s). Subsequently, the Business Development Bank of Canada moved into that location along with the B.C. Sheriffs Service and B.C. Liquor Control and Licensing Branch when HSBC moved out. It is now owned and managed by Nicola Wealth Management in its real estate portfolio, has been substantially renovated and retrofitted, and is currently for lease. Location-wise, it is across the street and less than one block over from the current former HSBC branch 10430 location pictured above.

Cheers,
Doug

What do they do with the ones like 5160 Yonge Street, North York Centre, Toronto, ON, M2N 6L9 where there's a royal bank a block down the street too?

I won’t be surprised if that branch closes as well. I believe that the majority of the 33 HSBC branches that are required to be retained will be ones that are west and maybe a handful throughout the rest of Canada.

In Toronto, Yonge and Adelaide might be one that they keep given it’s location. This branch also received permanent RBC signage which is a good indicator of its future state.

never liked the people in that branch when they were HSBC but their location is pretty convenient right above the subway line, hoping RBC just moves their other and way more competent employees down the street into that office

Honestly, I actually think all branches in the B.C. Interior, Alberta, Manitoba, and probably northern Ontario as well be closed. In all cases, there's an RBC branch nearby as they end to only be in major metropolitan cities in those province or places like Kelowna, Kamloops, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, or Thunder Bay that have branches nearby. There's also likely some excess branches in Toronto and Metro Vancouver, too, so there will be closures there as well, but they will be very strategic and keep HSBC's best, most profitable locations. In short, I think most of the surviving 30 or so branches will be from either Metro Vancouver, Toronto, or southwestern Ontario (i.e., Waterloo and Niagara areas), but those areas will also see closures too because that's just where so many branches and duplication is.

They might do that, yeah. In some cases, RBC may actually decide to close the RBC location and refresh the former HSBC location. Those I wouldn't count as one of the net 30 or so retained former HSBC branches, as it's still a closure, it's just coming from the RBC side of things.

HSBC no longer had branches in Northern Ontario. I believe Thunder Bay was shuttered a few years ago.

Yeah this looks like a likely to close branch too. I think the ATM is the big giveaway here. At the HSBC near my work the RBC ATM was already installed prior to opening.

Totally agree! To my surprise, they did install the RBC ATM a week later (maybe HSBC used incompatible ATM hardware or something?). In any case, still no exterior signage and the red colour scheme persists.

My HSBC Branch (Fifth & Sixth Branch in New Westminster, BC) was permanently closed during the transition, however, my statements, cheques and PAD’s show the branch address of the permanently closed branch.

I wonder when they will finally change it over to the consolidated RBC branch address?

Thanks! Good tips. Two of these sound like closures, or planned closures, since the transition to RBC, correct?

We can expect to see a lot more of those. Per FCAC regulations, banks and federal credit units must give at least 120 days advance notice of planned branch closures. If enough people write to the FCAC commissioner, FCAC can compel the bank to hold one or more community meetings with area residents.

Cheers,
Doug

I'm writing to share that on September 13, 2024 we're bringing two local teams together under one roof, where we can learn from each other and work together to best serve you and our local community.

On that date, the Yonge & Empress Ave. branch team located at 5160 Yonge Street, Toronto will be joining the Yonge & Hollywood branch team at 5001 Yonge St. North York, ON, M2N6P6. While Yonge & Empress Ave. will no longer be open for business after September 13, 2024 at 12:00 pm, our community presence will remains strong and we'll continue to be available to help you with your everyday banking and advice needs.

So many euphemisms...

Can someone who is in or was in the banking industry translate?

"We're consolidating branches and laying off half the staff, mostly likely from HSBC. Prices of mortgages goin' up!"

What's the date on the letter? Did they give you an earlier letter a few months ago? What transit is it? That may be in violation of FCAC Regulations. You might consider reporting them to the FCAC Commissioner.
