Spiritual Side: UU members to present a play on Sunday, June 30 - The West Volusia Beacon (2024)

We say gay!

On Sunday, June 30, at 10:30 a.m., members of Unitarian Universalists of DeLand will present the play We Say Gay. This play retells the story of 1950s Florida, when professors and students were accused of being gay or lesbian. Those targeted were interrogated and threatened. Many professors lost their jobs; students lost their rights to an education. Some even ended their lives.

The play was written by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, who has been an LGBTQ+ advocate for decades. Please note that there will be adult language.

Deborah McShane will be the director. Actors will include Nancy Jacobsen, Scott Mena, George Stevenson, Patti Rausch, Jade Hoke, Jim Dries and Carol Swarbrick Dries.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome, as we learn and search together for truth.

Understanding Communion

The Rev. Carlos Perez invites all to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand’s Table of the Lord in remembrance of Jesus Christ every Sunday at 10:45 a.m. Those assisting with Communion are elders Sue Brague, Marge Jones and Donna Mozley.

The Disciples of Christ believe Holy Communion is a central part of worship. It echoes the Passover feast, where Jesus shared bread and fruit of the vine with his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion. In worship, it is observed at the conclusion of the service, so worshipers can reflect on what came before and focus on the Cross of Christ, His return, eternity, and hope for the future.

The Disciples’ weekly observance is based on Acts 20:7, “On the first day of the week, we came together to break bread.”

Inspiration

The congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist, this Sunday, June 30, will continue the Summer Sharing Series of roundtable-style services online at 11 a.m. This Sunday, we will explore the subject of inspiration.

The following are some questions to ponder before we gather. Who inspires you to be your best self? Who have you judged that deserves your compassion? Facilitator Helen Scott will guide us through our discussion.

Please consult The Beacon Religion Directory to learn how to join us. All are welcome.

God’s protection

First Church DeLand, a Global Methodist Church, has a new series, “The Psalms of Summer.” Pastor Mark Bitner’s sermon title this Sunday, June 30, is “God’s Protection.”

When we think of protection, we may think of having a roof over our head to protect us from bad weather, being vaccinated to avoid a virus, or perhaps having internet protection from an electronic form of a virus.

There are many kinds of protection we utilize, but none as important as the protection God promises to us. God stands fiercely by our side through all of our trials.

“The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me; I will protect those who trust in my name.’” (Psalm 91:14)

What if?

At First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, on Sunday, June 30, Senior Pastor Michael Bodger will draw his sermon from Mark’s Gospel 5:21-43. Titled “What If?”, the message will involve two examples of faith in healing. This is a combined service meeting at 10:30 a.m.

Pastor Bodger will raise the question, “What if our faith-filled prayers do not result in happy endings?”

Scripture relates two joyful outcomes of a girl revived from death and a woman freed from bleeding, both healed by the Saviour who said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe!”

Faith stands as the key! How do we hang onto our faith in the face of answers that we cannot accept? Just what healing do we gain when our desires don’t seem transparent to us? God forever abides with us!

The church congregation welcomes all attendees to share a potluck lunch immediately following worship. If you choose to share a side dish or dessert, please take it to the kitchen door prior to the service. Do not hesitate to join if you have not provided a dish.

The important mission work Farm Share Food Distribution takes place near The Pavilion 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 29. With abundant and varied foodstuffs donated by Farm Share, volunteers will pack into your car boxes which will feed a family of four for about a week. Line up in the parking lot to receive this loving offering to needy families.

“A Focus on Spiritual Practices,” which is an interactive and informative exploration of ways to speak with God, meets in sessions 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays through July 17. Remaining topics in the series include “Movement” and “Prayer.”

Musician needed

Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in DeLand is looking for a musician who will be committed to play each Sunday at services. Call the church office at 386-736-3891.
