Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, always keep safety first to avoid personal injury or damage to the appliance or its parts. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your microwave or switch off the circuit breaker before attempting any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • Always discharge the capacitor before working on the microwave.
  • If the microwave has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time and don’t rush while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can clearly see and access microwave parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your microwave or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the microwave or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Consider wearing safety glasses and/or a dust mask when working with chemicals, dust or a large amount of debris to prevent irritation or injury.

How to discharge the capacitor

IMPORTANT: Carefully follow the correct handling and discharge procedures since exposure to the voltage levels inside a microwave can potentially cause severe injury or death. Prioritize safety at all times and follow the instructions and recommendations provided by the manufacturer. If you do not feel comfortable discharging a capacitor, do not attempt to do it yourself.

  1. Unplug the microwave from the power source.
  2. Grab a screwdriver with good insulation on the handle to protect against electric shock.
  3. Gently touch the insulated screwdriver blade to one terminal of the capacitor.
  4. Slowly and gently slide the screwdriver forward until it reaches the other terminal of the capacitor. Hold it there for a few seconds. This discharge process often results in a loud and startling ‘POP’ sound.
  5. Repeat the process to create a short circuit between each capacitor terminal and the chassis (bare metal mounting plate surface). If the capacitor has three terminals, use the same method.

How to manually open the door

Even if the microwave door is stuck closed, you can manually get it open. Follow these general steps, which can vary by brand and model:

  1. Unplug the microwave and allow it to sit unplugged for 10 minutes to naturally discharge the capacitor. Otherwise, you can manually discharge the capacitor by setting the microwave on a counter and removing the outer cover.
  2. Find the cover over an access panel that leads to the door latch lever. In most models, this will be accessible around the door area. In some cases, you may have to pop the control panel off.
  3. Once you find the access panel, you can manually disengage the latches so the door opens.

Causes behind a stuck microwave door

There are several common reasons why your microwave may stubbornly refuse to open. Here are the most likely culprits:

A broken door latch

The door latch secures the door while the microwave operates and engages a cam and switch assembly where the latch inserts into the microwave cabin. If the latch breaks, the door may get stuck.

Check for broken pieces or damage to diagnose a faulty latch. The latch can often be replaced without replacing the entire door.

Broken release button

Many microwaves have a plastic button that must be pressed to release the latch before opening the door. These buttons withstand thousands of pushes over the lifetime of the microwave, so eventually, the plastic can crack, break, or simply wear out.

Inspect the button for damage. Also check the coiled springs underneath, which can degrade over years of use. The button, internal springs, or both may need to be replaced.

Failing door lever

Some microwave models utilize a lever that engages the latch release when rotated or pulled. This lever is subjected to force every time the door is opened. Over time, the lever can break at its pivot point or at the internal tabs that connect to the latch mechanism.

Check the lever action and look for fractured pieces to find out if it’s preventing the latch from releasing. If that’s the case, the damaged lever will need to be replaced.

Broken latch actuator

The latch actuator is a small plastic or metal component that actuates when the button is pressed or the lever is turned. It works in conjunction with the release button or lever to disengage the door latch. The repetitive forces involved cause the actuator to eventually wear out and break.

You may need to replace the latch actuator if the door won’t open and other components check out okay.
